Somewhere I read or heard about IP 44.102.48.2 in or near
detroit being available from internet telnet and a conference bridge
style operation. What I dont remember is that there was
a port number associated with it, something like 3000.
Can someone fill the blanks in my feeble memory?

Subject: Book Wanted: "Radiotron Designer's Handbook"
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Hi all! I am looking for a copy of a book titled "Radiotron Designer's
Handbook." I believe the copyright is about 1941. I have a pretty good collecti
collection of pre-1945 engineering books from back when electrical info
was written to be understood, not to exclude membership as it is today...
Anyway, the book would get a good home, and I really need the info it
contains. I'm not getting it just to collect.
If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it
Just mail me your price, if reasonable...
Thanks!

I don't know what this poster means by "bites the big one" but
Supermorse is the way to go. This program uses the modern
convention for learning the code by sending each character at
about 20 WPM and varying speed by changing the space between
characters. For example, if code is being sent at 5 WPM or
at 20 WPM, the characters themselves always sound exactly the
same, only the space between characters changes.
The idea behind this is to force the learner to concentrate on the
specific SOUND of the character and not try to count the dots
and dashes if the characters were sent at a true slow speed
corresponding to the overall word per minute rate.
MA>> 2. Does the ARRL still transmit practice code sessions?

Well, not THAT old. Yes, the ARRL station W1AW transmits code
practise at several rates of speed to a schedule of times and
frequencies you will find in any QST. I believe they also follow the
convention I described above (there's a name for it, but I can't recall
it at the moment).
Enjoy your return to ham radio.

SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY
--------------------
Solar activity was very low. Region 7758 (S15E15)
produced the largest flare of the day, a B2/SF at 22/1450Z.
Region 7757 (N12W05), the largest region on the disk, also
produced a small subflare (SF/no x-rays at 21/2338Z).
Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
very low. Small flares are possible in Regions 7757 and 7758.
The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled. The greater
than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous altitude was high.
Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
expected to be quiet to unsettled. An occasional active period
is likely later in the forecast period due to recurrent
activity.

HF propagation conditions were near-normal over all
regions. Minor signal degradation was reported over some high
latitude transauroral paths, although most degradation was
quite weak and appeared to be isolated. Slightly stronger
degradation may begin to be observed over the next 24 to 48
hours in response to a well placed coronal hole. Middle and
low latitude paths should, for the most part, remain
unaffected.

All times associated with x-ray flares (ex. flares which produce
associated x-ray bursts) refer to the begin, max, and end times of the
x-rays. Flares which are not associated with x-ray signatures use the
optical observations to determine the begin, max, and end times.
Acronyms used to identify sweeps and optical phenomena include:
II = Type II Sweep Frequency Event
III = Type III Sweep
IV = Type IV Sweep
V = Type V Sweep
Continuum = Continuum Radio Event
Loop = Loop Prominence System,
Spray = Limb Spray,
Surge = Bright Limb Surge,
EPL = Eruptive Prominence on the Limb.

And old timers would say, not exactly incorrectly, that
my call was for an eXperimental station.

Also, wasn't the "A" prefix also a military indicator?

All that I can say is that MORE POWER HELPS. Get your local radio
club behind you, and then go up from there. Start with the local
government..then keep moving up. I know that in our county, we have a few
elected officials who have call signs..this would be a great help if you
could find some people like that in your part of the state.

There was a scam several years ago (about 1989, if I remember correctly)
involving a so-called Atlas rig. It was advertised in several of the
amateur publications, and many people sent in their money. No one ever
received any radio, and most were unable to get their money back. The
perpertrator was convicted of mail and wire fraud. I can't remember his
last name, but his first name was Michael, and he held a Technician
class license. This was his second conviction for this type of scam
(both were run under the name Atlas). I don't know if he's at it again,
but it certainly sounds like the same MO. I'd be very leery of this
operation.

To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
I have a brand spanking new PacComm HandiPacket. My major use is with MSYS
and a HP100LX. The TNC needs to be in KISS. I have noticed that at times
it reboots to battery backed defaults without cause.
Has anyone else using one seen this?
My guess is that the battery backed RAM is flakey. To reset it to where it
works right I have to toggle the power switch for a few minutes. Otherwise
it just locks up and then reboots.
Once in KISS (using the MKISS command), it seems OK. I shut the power down
and come back later to a locked up TNC.

I bought one and am very pleased with it. Compared it

it is there's no way to 'freeze' or 'hold' the display.

Subject: ADMIN: Changes to Shuttle Elements Mailing List
The Shuttle Elements Mailing List has gone thru substantial growth since it
was started in January 1992. There are now over 650 direct-delivery
subscribers, not counting expansion addresses. Up until now I have been
maintaining the list manually, it's time to automate the list subscription
process.
Over the past couple weeks I've been testing a new automated list and
archive server. It is now ready. You can now subscribe, unsubscribe and
change your mailing address on the mailing list all by sending requests to
the automated listserver, at the "listserv@alsys.com" address.
The commands that you used to use to access files on the archive server have
been changed, except the "help" command. You can still retrieve recent
elements from the archive server however, at this time I plan to keep only
Shuttle elements in the archives. The other items in the archive were
rarely accessed, probably because it is easier for most people to access
them via ftp.
Starting today, all elements will *only* be sent to subscribers on the new
list in the listserver. You *must* subscribe with the listserver in order
to continue to receive Shuttle elements.
The command to subscribe to the elements mailing list is:
subscribe elements <Full Name>
You should put your full name in where it says "Full Name", ie:
subscribe elements Gary Morris
That's it. You will get a confirmation back in the email with your
password. Your password will be used in the future should you want to
change your address or unsubscribe to the mailing list.
If you are interested in accessing files in the archives, you can send a
message containing the word "help" to get the complete set of instructions.
The listserver only accepts one command per mail message. The most commonly
used command on the listserver is:
get elements last-shuttle-elset

I don't know about this "scam", but the Atlas radio company is real
and has built several decent radios. The latest advertised was
the 310, and it was not a hoax, I worked a prototype...... The owner
of Atlas radio is down near San Diego, and you can talk to him on
the phone. (His name is Herb, he used to build Swan radios).
It is true that he advertised his radios a year ago and I have never
seen one delivered. This may be due to his overextending himself or
technical difficulties - neither is excusable. However, Herb is not
a bad fellow to my knowledge.

: Curious: "Technician Plus" is one of the *SIX* license classes listsed on
: the new FCC Form 610. Wonder why they bothered if that class doesn't exist.
: Another curiosity: no specific exemption is made in the rules regarding
